USE For splitting logs too knotty for a maul.
For splitting long logs.
PRODUCT BENEFITS Helicoidal shape: Splits the wood by rotating.
Rounded head: delays burring and lessens the risk of splinters.
Wider striking surface than a sledge hammer or a maul: allows the user to continue to knock the wedge right into the centre of the log and avoids the need for several wedges.
Anti-return notches.
Straight cutting edge: allows you to choose the orientation of the split.
Painted bright red so it won't get lost when in use in the forest.
Forged carbon steel, hardened and tempered.
SAFETY ADVICE Wear glasses, gloves and protective clothing.
The main risk from these tools is posed by flying chips, either from the tool itself or the object being struck. Chips may be due to a defect in the metal, simple aging of the tool or incorrect use.

MAINTENANCE ADVICE The striking surface of the wedge will distort under repeated blows from a hammer or maul and will quickly form sharp burrs which should be removed regularly.
This phenomenon is normal, since the head of the wedge is not hardened, so as to prevent chipping: it is therefore necessary to regularly refresh the surface, remake the original chamfer, round over edges and remove with a file or grinder all burred over material.
When grinding, it is essential to avoid overheating the ground surface, as this will destroy the hardness obtained by the original heat treatment.
